Wheat Imports in the Middle East Highlight Need for Secure Storage

The Middle East has become one of the most wheat-import-dependent markets worldwide. With a population of nearly 411 million people, the region faces a structural challenge: producing less grain while demand continues to rise.

According to an analysis by World Grain, key countries such as Egypt, Iran, Turkey, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia rely heavily on imported wheat due to agricultural limitations related to water scarcity, urbanization, high production costs, and population growth.

In this context, grain storage becomes a central pillar of food security.

Figures That Make the Difference

Egypt, the world’s largest wheat importer, will produce 9.3 million tonnes but will need to import 13 million to meet a total consumption of 20.4 million tonnes. Iran’s production will fall from 16 to 13 million tonnes, while imports will double to 2.5 million, keeping the country as a major buyer of Russian wheat. Turkey continues to play a key role as a regional processor, while Iraq is compelled to strengthen its strategic reserves in the face of supply volatility.

These figures highlight that wheat availability in the region depends largely on the ability to import, store, and manage grain efficiently.

Storage: The True Pillar of Food Security

Several countries have placed storage at the center of their food security strategies. Kuwait has described it as “the father of food security,” driving new investments, while Jordan is expanding the port of Aqaba to enhance logistics and storage capacity. The message is clear: importing is not enough, grain must be stored safely and under conditions adapted to each country.
